PRESSE RELEASE

Safety on the slopes

In 2024, 400 ski instructors in Val d’Isère signed an open letter describing the situation on the slopes, with suggestions for improvements and recommendations to ensure that skiing remains enjoyable. A steering committee was set up on this subject, bringing together the municipality, the Régie des Pistes de Val d’Isère, Val d’Isère Téléphériques, Val d’Isère Tourisme, the ESF of Val d’Isère and spokespersons for the Val d’Isère instructors.

In February 2025, an initial campaign to remind people of and raise awareness about safety rules on the downhill ski slopes was launched. Four of the ten main rules were communicated in a humorous but impactful tone. Posters in the colours of the Régie des Pistes were displayed on screens in the village and the ski area, on the Val d’Isère app, on social media and in newsletters. The four rules are highlighted with the overall message: ‘You’re on holiday, so respect others and keep everyone safe!’

On the ground, ‘Ski Tranquille’ signage secures dedicated areas, and ski patrollers patrol to raise awareness of the rules. The Regie des Pistes occasionally organize a Giant Slalom on the Borsat slope to allow skiers to pick up speed in complete safety: a well-supervised practice.

Winter 2025-2026:

  • Involvement of mountain professionals: signing of the ‘For safety and well-being on the slopes’ ambassador charter.
  • Raising awareness among children: presentation by the Régie des Pistes in every primary school class, creation of pom-poms by the children to raise awareness of the safety information provided. Official presentation of pom-poms to children on 1 February. The same project will be rolled out to children in the Sports Club.
  • Communication campaign: visuals in French and English will be displayed at professional establishments, on screens in the village and ski area, on valdisere.com and on social media. Safety capsules for social media are planned for the school holiday periods.
  • When purchasing a ski pass: inclusion of a sentence mentioning knowledge of safety rules on the back of next year’s ski pass.
  • Every Sunday, customers receive a safety notification on the Val d’Isère ski app, redirecting them to the valdisere.com website page with safety rules and a quiz to test their knowledge.
  • The 10 rules of good conduct on the slopes are highlighted on the home page of our website and on the piste map: www.valdisere.com/experiences-a-vivre/les-10-regles-de-bonne-conduite-sur-les-pistes/ and regularly relayed via our communication media (screens in the ski area, in the village, etc.).
  • Customers with a ski pass receive a newsletter with a safety insert on the second day of the pass’s validity.
  • For the second consecutive season, at the departure point of the large cable cars (Téléphérique de l’Olympique), a message reminding customer to take the gondola back down.
  • 2 push notifications per week on the Valdisere Ski app encourage customers to use the ski lifts to return to the village. A 20% increase in descents was recorded for the 2024-2025 season for the Olympique cable car. (info December 2025).
