Coming by car All you need to know

To get to Val d’Isère safely during the winter season, it’s essential to be well prepared. Here are our recommendations for getting around in the best possible conditions.

Snow chains are compulsory on at least two drive wheels on snow-covered stretches of road when the “special equipment compulsory” sign is displayed. Keep them easily accessible in your vehicle for quick installation.

Chaining zone
If you need to chain your vehicle, be sure to use the chaining areas indicated. There is a chaining area called “La Raie” when you are on the road to Val d’Isère after Sainte-Foy Tarentaise.

Snow socks are authorized and can be used on roads with the “special equipment mandatory” sign. However, under no circumstances can they replace traditional chains in extreme conditions.

Our practical advice

Practice: learn how to install your snow chains or socks before you leave to save time and avoid mistakes in the snow.

Prepare a travel kit: keep bottles of water, tissues or a cloth to clean your hands after installing chains, snacks, warm clothing and a good dose of patience handy.

Our safety tips

  • Extreme weather conditions: in the event of heavy snowfall, it’s best to delay your departure to avoid driving in dangerous conditions.
  • Snow-clearing vehicles: for obvious safety reasons, it is forbidden to overtake snow-clearing vehicles while they are clearing snow.
  • Traffic jams: if you are stuck, stay in your vehicle unless otherwise instructed by the police.
  • Traffic lights: these are activated during busy periods, especially winter weekends, to avoid traffic jams.
  • Adapt your driving style: reduce your speed in case of snow or black ice, and stay alert.
